Why I do this work:

I am a queer, late-identified neurodivergent person of color, who is multiply marginalized and chronically ill. I grew up mercilessly bullied and often isolated due to unknowingly failing at social norms and expectations that everyone else seemed to follow and understand. I still craved connection and acceptance, through all the rejection, so I started joining as many clubs and groups as I could to at least find those who shared interests with me. In this journey of self-discovery and community seeking, I discovered peer mediation and mentoring in high school. My love of helping others became an undeniable and inescapable passion. I have worked and volunteered in some capacity in the mental health field for over 25 years.

Because of my own background of being a multiple minority that has overcome diversity, stereotypes, and discrimination in my personal, professional, and academic life I feel compelled to help others within my community that may be going through their own struggles and barriers.

My passion has always been helping others. With every step of my education my goal was to use my training and personal struggles to assist others in finding the firm foundation they need to build their life on. I learned to see these challenges as learning opportunities and focused on accommodating myself in a way that led me to achieving my goals. I did not do this alone. I sought help from my peers, professionals, books, classes, podcasts, support groups, and strangers. I have absorbed and applied extensive information to harness my individual strengths and the strengths of my clients. I am on a constant journey of learning, understanding, and self-acceptance and want to bring you along with me.

Being newly diagnosed or identified as neurodivergent can be a time of confusion, grief, and discovery. You might feel alone, misunderstood, and like you don’t really know who you are without the mask. The amount of information out there can be both overwhelming and inaccurate. What I do is provide support to assist you with challenges that may come up as well as helping you implement ND affirming skills into your life. I’ve been there and struggled, not knowing where to turn, while trying to figure out where I fit in and how my life would change post-diagnosis.

How I do this work:

My coaching services are adaptable, non-judgmental, honest, and identity affirming. I strive to create an environment in which you feel safe and empowered to self-advocate and self-accommodate. I’m direct but compassionate and ready to celebrate all your wins. We can choose to keep sessions generalized to daily struggles or focus on areas such as self-transformation, unmasking, dating, relationships, communication, understanding and accepting late identification, and other common concerns.

My approach is to assist you in identifying your unique strengths and abilities, while amplifying them in a way that works for you, to reach your goals and your definition of success. The neurodiverse experience may manifest in ways that negatively impact us, often on a daily basis. This experience may shape our identity, potentially leading to a negative sense of self-worth. Being at war with oneself, trying to fight against your nature, is rarely sustainable. This is not the way it has to be. We will dig down, together, to the root of the problem, identify your strengths and barriers, and work together to create a reality that is congruent with who you truly are.

If you’ve ever felt like you are different from other people in ways that are obvious or even ways you can’t quite explain—I want to help you. You shouldn’t have to struggle with feeling unseen; wondering why what has worked for others misses the mark for you. I need you to know that it’s not your fault. I believe that when we attempt to generalize approaches, and oversimplify needs, we ostracize entire populations of individuals who fall outside of what is considered “typical”. Simply put: those methods were not developed for us.

I use a multi-modal, strengths-based, approach that is individualized to your needs. I found that many therapeutic approaches didn’t work for me or my ND clients as written. By using strategies informed by mindfulness, narrative therapy, somatic mind/body connections, self-compassion, attachment theory, neurobiology and neuroscience, and lived experiences we can work together to create a life more aligned with your goals in a way that works for you. Coaching is goal oriented and collaborative. This means you are the expert on your life while I help you clear the path to your goals. Although this is not therapy, it is still challenging to confront and change behavior that no longer serves you. There will be difficult moments but you won’t be alone in your journey.

I see a unique opportunity for neurodiverse coaches, such as myself, to serve our community in a way that only we can—through our first-hand understanding of the neurodiverse experience. I am motivated, dedicated, and excited by the opportunity to support empowerment in our community.
